Tank with homelux membrane
Far superior to paint on kits and cement topped boardsHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0 -
PVA reactivates when wet . It is the wrong product for the job
Synthetic primer such as primer G or bal prime should be used
No grout or adhesive is water proof and will allow water to pass. Epoxy grout can create a water tight seal but there are very few that would use
Ceramic tiles will also absorb 20% moisture so regardless of how the grout and adhesive it , water will still get into the substrate hence tanked membrane is far superiorHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. I tiled straight onto plasterboard 13 years ago in a well used family bath with shower - all still fine. But they'll never come off without taking the board with it....0

How is it fixed to the wall? Would it be easy to remove and reline with cement tile backer board?
If not, I would seriously consider tanking it before tiling it. This is the kit I used:

Took about a day to do. You'll also need some cheap disposable rollers and a cheap brush.
Don't use PVA.
Normal plasterboards.0 -
In my bathroom refit we insulated the external walls, and boarded with moisture resistant plasterboard. Around the shower I used aquapanel, all sealed at the joins with a waterproof adhesive.
Screwfix has a few bits that you might want to look into: https://www.screwfix.com/c/sealants-adhesives/sealant-kits/cat850062
Perhaps you bite the bullet and re-board the bits around the shower for added piece of mind? Use of aquapanel won't stop leaks, it just stops the wall falling to bits should there be a leak. Ultimately you need a good job doing on the tiling itself.0 -
Tile straight onto plasterboard worked fine in my old house - it was built like that and by the time I ripped out the original tiles they'd been up for 15 years with no problems. We replaced the tiles in the same way with tile onto plasterboard and it was fine. As far as I can tell my current house is also tile onto plasterboard - there must be millions of houses done the same way.
I reckon it will be fine for normal domestic use.0 -
Definitely use the Mapei tanking kit, it may save you a lot of grief down the line.0
