Esure Home Insurance - WARNING

If your home insurance with esure is due to renew soon, this is a warning to check all correspondence from them very carefully.

Mine was going to renew soon and they sent me a very complicated worded letter (separate from the renewal letter, but on first glance it reads just like a renewal reminder). This letter said that from the renewal date they would insert two new terms into my policy which were:
  1. I must have an intruder alarm fitted. If I don't have one then any future claims will be reduced.
  2. I must have very specific locks fitted to my exit doors, windows etc.
I don't have an alarm and not all my doors have the specific locks. I never claimed that I did when I first took out a policy.

This seems to me like a very sneaky scam by esure to leave their renewing customers under-insured to avoid future payouts.

I called esure just now to cancel my renewal, and I tried to help them out by explaining that this was my reason for cancelling, but all I got from them was "oh that's just an underwriting decision, it's nothing I can help with!".

Do you think it is for all customers or perhaps they have had a significant rise in claims in your area?

The letter says "we have reviewed the details of your policy and the sums insured". It makes no sense because it's a contents only policy, it's only a small 1 bed flat and we don't have anything much of any value. So little value in fact that I almost considered not bothering with any insurance at all.

You could always try getting a quote for a new policy with them - I suspect the clause wont be there then.

Esure no longer provides quotations for you on comparison sites, if they find that you have a policy with them.

We have a very high excess on our contents policy to keep the premiums down.

IMO it is not worth making a claim on small amounts anyway as they will just increase your premium..

We just want to be covered if the house was to burn down and everything was destroyed.
