Standard of the food, not as described in menu.

How was the standard of food not as described?

Was it only your opinion that it was not as described?
  • Standard of the food, not as described in menu.

Think you're getting a bit of a hard time here!

    Although:

If the food was poor then you should have sent it back and got it replaced.

If the food was not as described then you should have sent it back and got it replaced.

As long as you don't make a big deal out of it, most places would be more than happy to rectify it there and then for you.

If it was just poor by your standards then tough luck :(

Though I note your choice of words "rather than complain on the night and cause a scene".... Sort of strikes me like your brain is on "fight mode" by default.... As if complaining is automatically going to cause a battle between you and them. If you are polite and friendly then most often a complaint gets rectified with minimal hassle :)

Almost every restaurant now has their serves come round half way through the meal and ask if everything is okay with the food.

They do this for a legal reason. So issues can be fixed there and then.

If you told them everything was fine you can't really complain later on.
  • if you feel you had a legitimate complaint then feel free to complain, just because your friends disagreed does not make you wrong.

everyones experience will have been different

You're entitled to a full refund
  • Was it free because the restaurant was paying for it or because your company was paying for it?

    If the former, then why?

If the latter, then it's up to the company to complain. If your colleagues didn't want to, why would you take it on yourself to?
