Cast iron/wrought iron

What can I use to renovate a vintage oil lamp where the cast iron base is starting to show signs of rust?
I also have an antique oak standard lamp with a few wrought iron pieces on it - the one near the floor is starting to look rusty.
They were previously renovated about 25 years ago with some black stuff, but I'm not sure what this was.
Any ideas?
