Homebase drops useful service

Homebase's new Oz owners have just dropped from their website, the useful "Click & Collect" service they used to offer.
Shame on them :(

  • To be honest, I didn't rate it and don't see any loss with it going.

I tried to use it twice to be told both times over the phone by the store that the stock the website said they had wasn't correct and they couldn't honour the order.

I got offered the option to upgrade the order to a full online order with delivery at a charge, but it would take 3 days. Since I needed the products asap as I was refurbishing the house I'd just bought, I felt this wasn't good enough. The items I needed were actually cheaper at B&Q; the only reason I had used Homebase was because it's less than half a mile from the house, while the nearest B&Q is 6 miles away. There used to be a B&Q on the same retail park as Homebase but it closed last year.

To be honest, I find Homebase is OK, but more often than not end up using Screwfix and Toolstation which are also nearby as they are cheaper and often have better choice and availability. I've lost count of the times I've been into Homebase to get something but they've not had it in stock, only to find that Screwfix have had the item I'm looking for at half the price and in stock.

However, Homebase's new Oz owners stopped the store closure plan and hopefully you will, in due course, have a Bunnings store on your doorstep.

Rather than selling a limited range of massively overpriced products (like Homebase did) Bunnings sell a wide range of products at highly competitive prices (with a price guarantee) - when I browse around my nearest one I am reminded of B&Q in the early 'orange' giant warehouse days before they went 'Homebase style' in the face of competition from Toolstation and Screwfix.

So I'd say "Hurrah!" to the new Oz owners. They have saved many jobs and introduced new fresh competition into the market. (They also give away empty cardboard boxes to take your shopping home in, rather than charging you 5p for a flimsy bag)

I've twice used B+Qs stock checker only to be told in store they haven't had the items for months. Its possible Homebase has the same stock control problems so have ended click and collect as it cannot be relied on.

Sometimes it's amazing and they have your order ready within an hour to collect. Great for ordering it online and picking it up after work.

But you're correct, a few times I have been called back to say an item isn't in stock and they have refunded me. They used to be able to order stock in for you but haven't seen that around in a while.
