off-road (i.e. not on the public highway), no it doesn't...taxed or SORN yes, but not insured.

It needs insurance unless there is a sorn.

He can't give consent when he doesn't own it can he?

This may be semantics, but if he doesn't physically date the V5 until 20 mins after you've left, he still "owns" it....anyway, you could still be on a test-drive (which you would be covered for, third-party only, under your own policy)

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

No, the V5 simply shows he was still the keeper. Unless he's letting you drive away without handing over the money, you're the owner at that point. The V5 has nothing to do with it.

hands-up, not heard of that one before, quick bit of googling confirms...never needed to think of it before, was only aware of the sorn or tax one, ta.

Stop digging, you comitted two separate insurance offences and are going down the lines of attempting to pervert the course of justice.

OP, you could take out a second policy then cancel when you sell / alternatively there are several companies who offer temporary cover. https://www.confused.com/car-insurance/temporary

When I rang my insurance company, they told me I would have 2 weeks insurance on my old car. No extra charge, just the change over fee.

Yeah, I think a second policy which is then cancelled upon sale is cheaper than a temporary cover (unless the temp cover is just for a few days).

That's nice of them, what insurance company was this out of interest?
We just sold my wife's car. Was concerned about much the same thing (the new car was arriving before the ebay auction for the wife's car had finished therefore we needed to insure both cars for a short period).

My wife's insurer (The AA) insured the new car and gave her a "free" 14 day extension of cover on the old car - although in total she had to pay a £63 fee for the privelidge of changing cars etc.

£63 for 2 weeks is a bargain given that temp cover is looking like about £40 per day.

Thanks for all the replies everyone.
