Calor Gas cylinder

Options
I have a 7kg Calor cyclinder and its attached heater that I need to dispose of.

I tried to take it to the local council's waste amnesty, but they couldn't accept it :o They said I should take it to a shop that sells Calor products.

I know the name of the shop it was originally bought from. Just wondered whether I can expect any "deposit" back for the cylinder or whether I just have to be grateful they've taken it off my hands? or might they even charge me for the privilege?

I wouldn't dare to sell it privately because I cannot vouch that the heater is safe to use (whether the rubber pipe is safe etc).

You can never actually own calor cylinders, they only rent them to you. Try returning to a calor supplier. I guess you've lost the rental agreement, maybe they will return your deposit.
Cylinders other than calor may be different.

  • Have you got the original receipt from when you first got the cylinder? If so, there are Calor depots around the country where you can take the cylinder and, depending on how long you've had it, get some of the deposit back. However, if you've had it a long time, the cashback is small. Look on the Calor website.

Will the local scrapman not take the whole thing,we still have them driving about with their overloaded transit vans looking for any scrap metal
  • Thanks to everyone for their replies.

The recycling site would have taken it if the cylinder was empty, but it's (almost?) full.

I'm researching this for a relative, so I'll ask them if they have any paperwork from when they bought it.

Our nearest "depot" sites are a bit of a trek from here, so we're hoping a local Calor supplier will be able to take it.
  • Calor gas cylinders technically belong to calor, but many tips have an arrangement.
The scrap man can't take it if he's legit, but you may be able to freecycle it.
The hoses do degrade, but anybody with a brain cell would check it anyway and replace as necessary, they are a few quid in B&Q type places and a push on + jubilee clip arrangement mostly

you could always take it down the bottom of the garden and turn the tap on a little bit till it is empty and then take it to the tip.

Either 'sell' or offer on local faceache/freecycle groups - people will maybe want the gas.... or heater or both!

Or you can get £7.50 from a CALOR CENTRE (not any old Calor supply shop/agent) https://www.calor.co.uk/unwanted-calor-bottle-return even without the original hire agreement. That may involve an awkward trip to them though.

Most tips should take the heater metalwork; but not the cylinder.
  • Almost full bottle + regulator. campers, caravanners, somebody will buy it.
Remove the rubber pipe if it worries you.
