Am I entitled to any mail posted to my old address?

Morning Guys,

I was wondering if anyone could help me. I've recently moved out of rented accommodation. I have set up royal mails redirect service so have all that sorted, however, I ordered something a LONG time before I was due to move out. It's finally in the country and is due to be delivered to the old house. Now I handed back the keys and terminated my tenancy last Friday.
Am I still entitled to this piece of mail as it was a birthday present for a friend or do I cut my losses and order another one?
If it's to big to go through the letter box it'll be put in the safe place which I can access. Am I allowed to do this?

TIA

you can try but you can't guarantee someone will be there to pick it up or give it to you. You non longer rent the property but you can ask the LL or EA

I would have thought redirect service would prevent that from happening.

as you paid for it and it is addressed to you then you cannot be accused of theft but you are not "entitled" to anything.

you can ask/let the LL/EA/current tenant know a package is on its way and trust to luck they do not steal it or return to sender themselves

you can take a chance on nipping in to the "agreed place" to collect it yourself before anyone else does or you can let the above know that is your preferred option so they do not panic at the sight of someone on the property who has no right to be there

You're entitled to it in the sense that it's your property, but nobody at the old address is actually required to lift a finger to help you get it.

Maybe it's being delivered by a delivery firm other than Royal Mail.

It sounds like you have tracking info:
It's finally in the country and is due to be delivered to the old house.

Maybe try calling the delivery firm to explain your problem. For example, maybe they could hold the package at their depot for collection with id.

Whoever takes possession of it is legally required to hold it and keep it safe for you. They must also, legally, allow you to collect it.
  • If you know which courier company are delivering it can't you contact them and request they deliver it to a different address?

Surely anyone who is a decent person would just take the parcel in for you and let you collect it?!

    Indeed.

And surely anyone whi is an indecent person would open the parcel, keep or sell the contents, and deny all knowledge.
