Aaargh! Dropped our new Telly!!

We're doing a bit of decorating and had to move our 4 month old 55" smart TV out of the lounge - guess who dropped it!

So cross with myself. It now has a crack and is unwatchable.

I wondered about claiming on the insurance as we have accidental damage cover, but with an excess of around £300, and the raised premiums as a result, would we be better moneysavers to just bite the bullet and buy a new one, avoiding insurance?

Also, what do I with this 55" telly. Can it be repaired? Are there people who buy these?

Some advice from prudent techies very much appreciated.

If you want to get rid of it stick it on freegle/freecycle and offer it as spares or to be repaired or if you want something for it put it on ebay.

Where is the crack, the screen ?

If its just on the surface it might be repairable.

Take a photo of it switched on and put it on ebay for a price your happy to accept.

Do a dummy quote for insurance, entering your circumstances including the value of the claim. Then you can see how much it may affect your premiums.

Our local TV repair shop says "If your screen (TFT Panel) is cracked or smashed it can't be repaired, the panel will need to be replaced. From our experience, in most cases the price of a new panel would make the TV beyond economical repair. "
  • Ironically the cost of sourcing and fitting a replacement panel is often more than the cost of buying an equivalent spec TV. As others have said, either eBay it, Freegle it or take it to your recycling centre.

If you want to try and get some money back, even broken the TV does retain some value. There are independent service centres and DIYers who will buy the TV for the main board and power board which will likely still work. If you are handy with a screwdriver and can be bothered, take them out of the TV as they will be worth more like this. Very few people will be prepared to pay for postage to ship the entire TV in order to strip out parts.

That said, it's a fair amount of hassle for maybe £30-£50 tops for the parts.

Be very, very careful attempting this - there are capacitors in the TV that will hold a lethal static electrical charge, even if the set has not been used for some weeks.

What is the point of having insurance if everyone tries to avoid claiming? You might as well not bother and be a real money saver....;)
If it was a cheap TV just buy another cheap one, if it was expensive, swallow the excess and be done.

To fix it someone would have to be lucky enough to find another faulty TV of that exact model.

In TVs now the uncommon components are already obsolete when they leave the factory, common components have the markings etched off to make them unidentifiable and circuit diagrams are kept a close secret. It depends on the exact fault, but mostly the days of fixing consumer grade TVs is long gone.
