my understanding is the setting of the DD has to be via agreement. So if you feel it is wrong, you need to tell them what you are prepared to pay, and ask them if they feel it is not enough,to demonstrate why0

They must currently know what the demand is overall as it can be measured at the other end. This is a good average. And it peaks when TV programmes end etc.
How knowing the usage habits per household is going to help I don't know?
I once attended a lecture about power distribution and was told an early example of unforeseen demand causing a crisis was in 1937 when a Welsh boxer(Tommy Farr) fought Joe Louis in the USA. In the early hours of the morning half of UK(and all of Wales) got up to listen to the fight.

Possibly not, if we end up with ToU tariffs (another Govt/industry objective.) It might much cheaper to fill a flask for a half time drink prior to the start of the match. It’s called progress. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0 -
Thanks guys for advice and suggestions. I am on a standard tariff, just coming up to a year into my contract so would love to consider switching but now am a little stuck because of the debt i inadvertently built up.
They have said they can put me onto a cheaper tariff, fixed until 2019 but i know it saves to switch at the moment
It was crazy, they started off taking £125 for both, then that reduced to £80. I guess i took my eye off the ball and assumed that it was accurate as that's how they said it would be when installed. Now i know its still based on the old fashioned method will keep a much closer eye on things0 -

Depends upon what the cheaper tariff rates are .0 -
Just wait until smart meters get installed for eco7 all electric meters. There will be a flood of "they increased my direct debit from £30 a month to £110 !
I ve lost count of the number of eco7 users getting billed night rate tariff for day rate. Nothing is done to correct it much by BG. Scot Power, EDF .
Obviously no one complains when this happens and stick with the status quo even though they all know whats happening by suppliers with their auto billing systems.
I remember putting one customer right so he paid what he should and read the meter properly. He got an £800 catch up bill, complained and BG reinstated his transposed billing immediately.
Smart meters will put paid to all that loss of revenue.Odd why there is a delay in smart Eco 7 meters. They should have been the first in line along with smart prepayment meters.
Just to clarify, smart meters will be 100 % accurate on eco 7 meters. A large number of current dumb meters have both the digital clock way off correct time, the 24 hr timer clock on the old ones is unbelievably innaccurate.
Meter readers in my area routinely read rate1 as the night rate on most digital Ampy type meters when this meter is programmed rate 1 to be the day rate. Smart meters will be able easily to adjust for BST/GMT meaning a correct night time switch will maintain the same year round. Bring them on !
All positives for smart meters, but of course the types who want it their way will simply refuse one !0 -
This is one of the reasons I have refused to have a smart meter fitted.
I send my meter reading in every month and know exactly how much I have used.
Only if I owe them any more than my DD every month I will increase it.0 -
I had an email, from my supplier, after staying but changing to a more expensive tariff, saying that, if I didn't increase my debits, I may end up owing £X00 by the next account assessment. However, my new increased monthly amount had not been entered and ,in fact, I had a rebate of £100+.0

Me too! Some of those who have had a smartmeter fitted are fine until they switch. Some have regretted it. And then there are those who will never admit to making a bad choice.:pI think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.
