Car Insurance with a Modified Car

I am looking at buying a Subaru, a stupid dream I've always had I know, but as I'm sure is common knowledge a lot have been "Tinkered" with.

Obviously I want my insurance to be completely legitimate and I have tried to find everything that is none standard on the car to declare, not much as I want one as standard as possible, but I'm worried I've missed things or there may be things I can't see, I have obviously asked the dealer also but a remap or something etc would almost be impossible for me to tell.

How would I stand with the insurance? I am making every effort to keep it 100% declared.

You could pay to get a professional engineers report detailing all of the modifications.

Firstly i must point out that it's "non standard" not "none standard" ;) .

Your best bet is just to check the car over for all the usual modifications such as cone air filter, suspension (springs and shocks), engine bay hoses, exhaust modifications etc.

I wouldn't be concerned much about it being remapped if you havn't been told that it has, as this is not something the insurance company could find out very easily at all. I also wouldn't be too concerned about other modifications that you can't see such as the engine being bored out. If a car had extensive modifications like this then it is usually mentioned when being sold.

What Subaru exactly are you buying and what year is it?

    Haha sorry sir!

I will check everything, just want to know everything is legitimate if I get pulled/have a bit of a bump.

It's an 06 WRX STI, the hawkeye model, was looking at possibly the RB320 but they're pricey so will stick to the standard WRX STI.
  • In the old days, before the internet & forums, if I was thinking about buying a car and wanted to know how much the insurance would be, I'd phone up for a quote.

    Just try that?

Well I did ring them, I am not asking for advice on how much it would be here. I have rang them but the call centre staff just spout off "All Modifications must be declared" which I obviously understand, however as I am buying a car which is known for being modified I was asking how I would fare if there were modifications "Under the hood" I didn't notice/could not see. Eg a remap.I didn't know about.

These days its almost impossible to know with any second hand car what might be a modification, as some insurers even want to know about optional extras too! Unless you trawl for a copy of the original brochure, how are you to know what was 'standard' years later!!
How's it going, AKA, Nutwatch? - 12 month spends to date = 2.60% of current retirement "pot" (as at end May 2025)

Subaru is not Money saving though, the fuel guzzler.

Are you hoping to fulfil that boy racer dream you have?

either way it isn't going to be cheap for insuring
