How hard is it to fit vinyl flooring ?

Hi

We're having a new bathroom & ensuite fitted & we're planning to put vinyl flooring down.

We're getting quotes from various local firms for supply & fitting.

However I've seen can buy it direct cheaper than in the shops, same brand & pattern so it's not just a cheaper quality.

I've looked on you tube & it doesn't look too hard to fit so I'm wondering about doing it ourselves.

The bathrooms haven't been fitted yet so we wouldn't have to cut round much.

Has anyone any experience ? Any pitfalls we should consider ?

Is it relatively easy or would it be a false economy ?

Cheers

Jen

Still really hard to cut around radiators, if you have them, although you can buy covers.

Vinyl off a roll, glue down tiles, or click-lock LVT ?

Vinyl off a roll can be a pig to work with and get neat cuts. Glue down tiles certainly best left to the installers. Luxury Vinyl Tiles are a doddle to fit.

In all cases, the floor needs to be flat and smooth before laying any vinyl. If you have uneven floorboards, these will show through in time as would any humps & hollows in a concrete floor.

I think having a fitter in a bathroom would be worthwhile as getting a neat edge round the WC and basin is very difficult.

Could you just employ a local fitter having bought online?
  • I've just had vinyl laid in my bathroom and they put ply sheets down on floorboards first, what I thought would happen has......quite a bit of creaking when walking on it. Also I've never had vinyl laid before and didn't realise it would need white mastic stuff along all the skirting board edges. I'll only have it down another year or two as wanting to change my Ivory bathroom suite to white and have a shower installed, but don't think I would go with vinyl again
  • Yes, you can do it yourself. It won't be (probably) as good a job as a professional, but you've already worked out that it would be a whole load cheaper.

Give yourself plenty of time for the preparation, and plenty more time for the laying. Think every cut through carefully. And then think it through again, before making the cut.

You can make patterns for awkward areas out of newspaper and then lay them onto to the vinyl.

    Good luck.

  • Its hader than it looks, I tried to do a bit in a cupboard under the stairs from our left overs, It ended up in the bin, the fitters made it look so easy

If you think you can DIY, then you can make yourself a template first, from something else, taking time to get that perfectly cut, you could then just cut round the template in the garden and pop it down.

What about a big roll of thick brown parcel paper?
