Solicitors fees for probate etc.

Hello,

So basically the executor left the solicitor to deal with all things death related following the death of my mother.

I dont know the fees they charge as I am only the beneficiary and the solicitor tells me very little. She also hasn't told the executor the charges and % fees.

We are due to settle everything in the next month or so I hope.

Below is what was left in estate.

House valued £110,000 with £50,000 mortgage still left.
Monies valuing £10,000.

What would yous reckon the general fee would be for this. I know they charge more for emails and phone calls and meetings. If you have any idea what the bill would roughly come to I would be grateful. I'm thinking somewhere between 4-5k. However it's just a guestimate.

Thanks

The solicitor is oblliged by the rules he operates under to tell the client what charges will be made. Nobody on here can really guess as charges vary considerably.

Ok again I can't get the information as I am beneficiary and the executor is sick of contacting them and running the bill up further.

I was hoping that someone with a similar experience had a rough idea. Yes they all charge abit different but generally they are around the same.

    Cheers anyway

Sorry to say but they vary wildly! The executor will already have been told in writing. He should have no need to call them.

The executor will alrerady have been told in writing.

    This ^

We were given a price in writing before we agreed that the solicitor should do the work.

Ok well then maybe the executor is withholding this information from me as I have asked for it several times. And again with numerous other things I have asked I will wait until all is resolved.

Uselss asking for anything when money is concerned with folk. Solicitor didn't want to tell me, executor says they dont know, and the one who it impacts is me. Who isnt allowed to know anything.

That's the joy of no life insurance. The other person left has to pick up all the pieces and face all the uncertainty

I'm a legal sec and Probate files are generally charged on an hourly rate - so impossible to estimate. As each telephone/letter/email received/sent is charged (generally at a fixed figure) it is a good idea not to chase too much.

But the Executor should have been sent Terms and Conditions plus an initial letter to advise of this - have they lost it?

The firm I work for normally creates three invoices on Probate the file. The first, and normally largest one, is often £3000. Though I have seen as low as £750 and as high as £13,000!!!

I would advise that you let the Executor and Solicitor deal with the estate though OP. As a beneficiary there's not much input you can give and I've never met a client who actually understood how much work goes into a Probate file.
Currently studying for a Diploma - wish me luck :)
