Cancelled car insurance

A few years ago we were attempting to set up a new car insurance policy with black box insurer Insurethebox. They were unable to contact us to arrange the box fitting for a few weeks - the emails went into my junk folder and my husband failed to listen to his voicemail. Because we failed to organise the fitting of the black box within the allotted timescale Insurethebox cancelled my husband's car insurance. We paid the bill promptly and moved on. Several years on it's clear that this is now and will continue to cost us a fortune as we need to buy specialist car insurance for people with previously cancelled policies. Is there any way for the record of this to be expunged?
