Thanks. I have already done a fair bit of research on this, but I'll see if I can find any fixes or suggestions by googling it.
Would something like this work??

Thank you so much for this, I really appreciate it
I'll read the instructions carefully and give it a go tomorrow.
I'm not hellbent on rejecting the car, in fact I could do without the stress. If I could increase the mpg to a reasonable amount, I'd be happy. Fingers crossed your link works!0 -
There's no doubt in my mind that they scrimped with this "service", so it might just be a matter of the air filters or fuel filters need changing.
Why are you so sure it''s because of the service?
it could just be clogged up from never going more than a mile at a time and needs an italian tune up.0 -

I'm not certain it's the service, but I am certain that they didn't service the car properly. I've read that the air filters, spark plugs and fuel filters can all have an effect on your fuel consumption, and I believe they're all checked on a full service? That was my thinking, at least
You're right though, it could just be that the car hasn't been driven much.
Somebody also suggested filling up with premium fuel next time I visit the petrol station, as that can improve fuel consumption.0 -
Couple of points, if you are going to reject the car stop using it and get prepared to be unable to use it whilst you fight it out with the dealer. As already mentioned if they deny there is a problem a professional inspection report will be required followed by a trip to the court. This may not be quick or easy.
If you are going to try to remedy the possible issue do you know what was done when the garage serviced the car? Often this will be no more than a oil change, did they provide an itemised invoice? If not call and ask what was done.
If needed you can then get any outstanding service items changed, air filter, fuel filter, spark plugs spring to mind but check your handbook.
I would also consider running a concentrated fuel system cleaner through rather than a tank of premium fuel, lot more concentrated. I have used BG44K and Archoil before with good results.0 -
It does sound low but with BMW i wouldn't expect great fuel economy figures and definitely a lot less that they claim. A little 1.8 One series should be a lot better than that though. Based on what i was getting with by 3 series you have a big problem with that car.
I recently got rid of my 2007 E93. It was a 2 l and the E93 is a very heavy car. My driving was 80 - 90% short rural / urban mixed trips and i am in general very heavy footed (in other words ragged the balls off it because otherwise its snail pace slow). Manual MPG calculation suggested i was getting between 26 -30 mpg, long term mpg readout on the car said 28.9 when i got rid of it. So if you are getting 22 tops with careful driving you need to think about an independent engineers report because thats not right.0 -
Update for those of you interested
I just spoke to the dealer who apologised for not getting back to me. He said there wasn't really much they could do and his manager was on holiday so couldn't speak to him about offering a refund.
I explained that I was considering rejecting the car due to the issues and he said I wouldn't be able to reject the car (or rather, they wouldn t accept it) as the car was working fine and there was nothing wrong with it.
I then said I had been advised to get an independent report and he asked me to give him 24 hours to find a solution.
So now I'm a bit stuck! But at least I've made contact. My 30 days ends on the 21st of September.
I just want to thank each of you for your responses so far - it is greatly appreciated.0 -
