Pre-exchange, told fitted oven and dishwasher don't work

I think u are panicking. Unless you know you need four months mortgage and bills saved up as soon as you move in, you could use some of the money to repair/get a second hand oven. I bought a new good one for £220 on ebay. Fitted it myself easily. I have also replaced two heating elements.
How do you KNOW the boiler needs replacing imminently? Have you had it inspected (Not by British gas, they adore saying a boiler needs replacing when it could be repaired)?
I replaced bath, put in an old vanity and retiled the bathroom using fab tiles I got in a sale - for less than £300. The bath cost £100. I also relocated the shower pipework, discovering that the old pipework was leaking so good job I did that! The bathroom looked like something from a showroom and I am just average at DIY!
Youtube is really good for showing you how to do jobs that might be considered a tradeperson's job. I wouldn't mess with electrics or structural work, but anything else time, patience and sheer determination will get done and save a bundle on.0 -
Appreciate the responses and suggestions on how to move forward economically. Hopefully it is just FTB jitters.
I think the fact that my mindset was "kitchen's fine, everything else will need doing at some stage", means that the "kitchen's fine" part of that not quite being as expected seems like a disproportionate problem.0 -

Electrics as you say, I wouldn't touch. With plumbing I have a relative who does that for a living and would do it for so little that I don't see the benefit to trying my hand at it - better to spend time with them, try to pick up little bits to build a bit of confidence, and consider whether to try my hand when it comes to crunch time.
Plastering and tiling I have enough experience at to be prepared to do it on my own home, and the likes of laminate flooring I'm basically taking the mindset you suggest.0 -
It is only an oven! At least they told you. FTB nerves I think.0
-
Have you actually tried them?
I wonder if it's just a case of the vendor saying "they don't work" just because they don't want you complaining on completion day that there is something trivial wrong with an otherwise good oven (e.g the light does not work)0 -
Look on the Currys website. They fit and take away the old appliance.
If spending a few hundred quid is really worrying you I would ask yourself if you can afford this house at all.0 -

OK - it is in that there's a wire to connect to a socket, but that's no different to changing a plug really (something the current generation knows little about....).
If we were talking abou a re-wire back to the consumer unit, I'd agree. That's 'electrics' which needs competance or an electrician. but connecting a 3 core wire to an existing Socket? A 12 year old should know how to do that......
When moving into a new house, this is the best £3 investment you can make:

If finances are tight, maybe investigate getting a countertop combi microwave with a convection oven and grill, until you have funds to replace the main oven.
...
TBH, a couple of small households I know have practically stopped using their main oven, because the combi oven is so much more convenient. The convection oven function roasts and bakes fine.
Completely agree. When I'm cooking for one or two I always use the combi. I estimate it will pay for itself in a year or so in reduced electricity bills compared to my conventional oven and grill.
You should be able to get a replacement dishwasher via freecycle, built-in ones seem to come up on a regular basis with people changing their kitchens and wanting everything 'new'."In the future, everyone will be rich for 15 minutes"0 -
Your offer was based on a working, albeit second hand, oven and dishwasher. Just ring their agent and say you'd like to knock £250 off the purchase price (or wait until the survey comes back.)0

And if you were my buyer I'd tell you to get stuffed.
We've all moved into places that have had things not working that we expected to. If you can't afford a new oven, how on earth are you going to afford to fix the odd roof leak0
