Sky told me my router is broken... What offers are available?

A new one from sky, including delivery is £40 and would arrive Wednesday.

My son in on the Autism spectrum and we rely alot on YouTube to pacify him in the house, luckily he has just started full time at special school.

Any current offers on with routers and providers?

I've seen Virgin have one that they can connect you on the same day. BT have an offer with free BT sport.

Where would I pick up a new sky router from of I needed to? Do argos or such stores sell them? Also what do I need to look out for if I went down this route? Are all routers a standard setup? Phoneline and power socket only.

I'm assuming that sky supplied your existing router.

If that is the case then they should replace it for nothing.
  • Get back on to Sky, tell them you are leaving and ask to speak to the cancelation team. Tell them why you are leaving and they will probably send you a free router if you agree to stay for a year.

Are you standard copper connection (ADSL with speed up to about 17Mb/s) or newer fibre (to the box or to your home with a much faster speed - normally)

Reason I ask is that if it is ADSL then your login and password are built into the router so if staying with sky you need to get one from them. Once you have a working router there do seem to be waiting of interrogating the router to get the login/password but sky will not give it to you. That being the case if you are not technically minded you are stuck with sky's offering though according to their terms and conditions you can use third party equipment but get no support from sky.

Not sure about the fibre router (availability of login/password) but I understand their Ts & C's only allow you to use sky's router.

Many other providers use openreach cabling (like sky) but virgin use their own so you would need to check availability with them.

Edit: Sky may or may not be correct about your router bring duff. If you get any response from it at all it might be worth posting on the sky community forum because there are some good folk on there who might be able to help with specific knowledge....see http://helpforum.sky.com/t5/Broadband/bd-p/sky_broadband
  • Sky told me that the router was out of warranty now and "new ones are £59.99 and £9.99 delivery but luckily they are on offer currently"

I told them I would shop around and get back to them in the next day or so.

My speed used to be around 12-14 mb/s
But the last 24-36 hours it's struggled to hold more than one device and then dropped to 1.5 at best. I'm not currently under any contract with sky it's just rolling at the minute.

    You can always change provider.

You get one for nothing then.

I'd never pay those type of prices.

Op-as you say you are rolling.

That gives a lot of leverage.

Buy a used working Sky router on eBay (other auction sites are available) for about £5.

BUT I reckon the problem is external and they're probably fobbing you off.... Just as all ISPs do.

If I was looking at £50+ I would NOT even consider an ISPs own router.

  • So to update. I chatted to sky again this morning, this time via live chat. I actually asked them how long was left on my fixed contract, it ends at the end of this month. Without hesitation they offered me 50% off broadband and a FREE, new latest model router and FREE delivery.

    I'm happy at that.

Every cloud has a silver lining. Just think, if it hadn't gone wrong you may not have phoned them up and ended up losing out on the 50% off.

  • I have an old one that you can have. We switched to virgin and Sky did not want their router back.

Sorry just seen this - you won't need my old one now!
