Did you not get fined for late submission of tax returns? That's normally a £100 minimum, up to £300 after 3 months. It can be double the tax owed.
If not, you've been exceptionally lucky-probably helped by the fact that you admitted the offence voluntarily.

Always good to see an update. Very surprised at the lack of penalties.

I imagine they felt that moving to Norwich was punishment enough. :)

I got an accountant who very kindly did all of my tax returns since 2013/14 all the way through to 2016/17 for £480. Not a bad price considering how much they told me I'd usually be charged.

There may will follow a disorderly queue for that accountant at that price!

I hope that this is the end of this for you (no penalties suddenly appear on your tax account). If so you have been very fortunate.

I'm not so bothered by the lack of penalties, as they are possibly variable or waived, but the interest is statutory, and the HMRC SA system adds it automatically to the tax based on when it was due, so even for 2013/2014, this is from 01/02/2015 and I presume up to June 2018 - how was this only £6 for 3.5 years ???

Good result either way, but curious.
I didn't do it, nobody saw me do it, you can't prove a thing! ;)

If the OP never registered as self employed then the tax returns would never have been issued. Therefore the OP hasn't actually missed any deadlines.

Once the necessary tax returns were issued then the OP would have had 3 months to complete them. Only if they were filed after that 3 months would they have received a fine for late submission.

OP suggested earlier their GROSS income was around £250 per week, which over 48 weeks a year (4 weeks for holidays) is £12000 a year before expenses.

It's entirely likely that the accountant 'found' or was able to 'estimate' sufficient expenses to bring down their net income to levels which mean little, if any, tax/NI was due in those years.

It also depends on the circumstances of how the returns had been requested/submitted, and whether 'Failure to Notify' has been considered.

If Not then the due date for payment of any outstanding tax would be 3 months and 7 days after the date the returns were issued.

As there seems to be little tax liability in any of the years, and the OP has voluntarily made the admission that returns have not been filed, then it's entirely possible that FTN hasn't been considered in this case.

  • Did you have to register as a sole trader first and get the unique tax reference number or did you just sort taxes out.

Last post from OP on this thread was in June 2018.
