When taking prescription tablets abroad do I need to take a letter from the doctor or anything?
I always carry them in my hand luggage in their boxes with the label on.

You should be OK with them being in the original container/box for most destinations. It may be advisable to take a copy of your repeat prescription form if you have one.
Be aware that certain country prohibit the import of certain drugs. I believe you are not allowed to take codeine into Greece.0
