Just wondering if any of you lovely people who have just taken delivery of a shiny new 67 plate motor could let me know if the new car tax rules for cars costing over £40k applies to the list price or the "on the road" price of the vehicle?

I'm looking at a car that's manufactures price is £39k ish but on the road price inc road tax etc is £40k plus.

    Thanks for your help
  • To be honest, start speccing up some pretty ordinary cars and you can soon start hitting around the £40k mark.

There's a nasty green eyed monster lurking in this thread, which is a shame, and from a newbie, too. OP, good luck to you if you can afford a £40K car - I wish I could, and why shouldn't you seek to minimise your tax obligation? Everyone's entitled to avoid tax, so long as it is legal avoidance and not illegal evasion.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

I have a 40Kcar - I bought it new nearly 2 years ago and it's nicely run-in now at 26K miles, and goes better, with better fuel consumption than in the first year of ownership.

It's the most expensive car I've ever bought, but I feel I deserve it after 42 years of working and saving. I spend a lot of time in my car and cover a whole load more miles now than ever I did before - so I want to enjoy travelling - and don't see it just as a necessary unpleasant task such as mowing the lawn or washing dishes.

I specced my current with a raft of options which will probably become standard features on most cars in the years to come.

I felt my last car was out of date as far as useful features like auto-lights, auto-wipers and such was concerned and think I kept it too long

I'm now retired, no mortgage, and my last car was 12 years old when I sold it.

The depreciation in the last 2 years is of no importance to me.

I'll perhaps look at the 'cost to change' in 8 years or so when I eventually come to replace it.

As far as the OP is concerned - I wish him/her all the best - enjoy your car. :D
