Just got an email from b&q-with a link offering 10% off british gas service plans. Hope that saves someone money. Link says from £11.70 per month( guess this is the discounted price as BG are quoted £13 on their site)Offer available till 30 November. Not sure if this includes/or you have to have your boiler serviced too-please check first.Of course a private contractor may be cheaper..

Hi Holly....Quite a bit of advice on this board (and from Martin himself, I think) is to self insure.

Maybe BGas's discount is to balance out all those phonecalls you'll be making to them when they get the bills wrong. If you've got the patience to hang on that is...

To transfer links, Holly, left click on the address bar make it go dark, then left click on the double page icon (copy)somewhere in the toolbars, then go to where you want it copied, like this message board, and left click the paste icon. Add a bit of text, bobs your uncle.

Self insurance Annie, is putting money aside in an interest bearing account to cover expenses such as boiler breakdown. If your boiler is fairly new, perhaps covered under the guarantee anyway. Swinton were last year doing it for something like £60.
  • There are two main reasons why I have a British Gas Service Plan on my house in the UK.

    1. I can never get a CORGI gasfitter to do the Landlords' Safety Certifiacate, (the house is rented) nor to repair if anything goes wrong. They only want to install central heating systems.

    2. I am 1500 miles away in southern Spain and it gives me peace of mind to know my son and lodgers are not going to be poisoned in their beds through my negligence/failing/inability to find a CORGI reg man at the right time.

There is also a CO detector, which I ordered from the internet, the BG man installed it in the optimum position and advised my son about it on his next visit (no extra charge).

In my case, it's good value for money.

I assume the discount only applies to new customers?
