What is the strangest house you have viewed

  • I viewed a 'studio flat with separate kitchen' years ago in London. It turned out to be one attic room with a sink built into the window sill
  • About ten years ago we viewed a barn conversion which had been done by a builder for his own occupation, but he and his wife were getting divorced so were having to sell the house. We were told not to park on the drive because it was shared and the neighbour needed access at all times. When we arrived we realised the access was for the huge quantities of building materials the neighbour was storing, so that was a definite put off before we even got inside. The seller opened the door and there was a blast of a horrible smell, kind of unwashed dog mixed with smelly cooking. We went into the kitchen, which had a half finished wooden floor, the rest was concrete. The kitchen units were all unmatched and also unfinished and the sink was full of dirty dishes. Off the kitchen was a downstairs bathroom described as having a corner bath - it was a normal bath, placed across the corner of the room, and it was green. In the dining room there was the original arched barn opening which had been glazed, and would have had a lovely view except they had planted a conifer hedge right outside the window. It was just the width of the window, it didn't continue to either side. When I asked why they had put it there, I was told it was for privacy, but it overlooked open fields for miles. There was also a cloakroom, but the toilet and sink had never been installed - they were pink. Upstairs were 3 bedrooms - the first one the door only just opened because it hit the bed so you had to sort of sidle round it to get into the room. The second we didn't get to see because there was a teenager asleep in it (2.30pm) and the master looked like thieves had got in and ransacked it, there were clothes everywhere. We decided the wife was unhappy about having to sell so couldn't be bothered to tidy up. It was still on the market 5 years later.
  • Not on the market at the time (it is now) we once stayed in a small B&B that was formerly a 2-storey early 19th century cottage that had been converted at some point.
The bedroom we stayed in had the now-obligatory en-suite installed in a corner of a very large bedroom. Except that it had been installed in the corner about as far as possible away from the existing drainage/soil pipe. The soil pipe from the toilet ran just under the floor boards, with about a four inch drop, diagonally across the entire room, to a sharp bend where it fed into the older soil pipe. You can imagine how well the toilet flushed! The pipe blocked regularly.

Another bedroom of similar size was completely empty except for an unenclosed toilet in one corner, and from the look of it, it wasn't a recent addition, so you couldn't say it was a work in progress.

There's plenty of scope for a new purchaser to improve the property & build up the B&B side of things, but I fear its present reputation may linger for quite a while.

^^ That reminds me of dodgy plumbing where 2 toilets were back to back either side of a wall, When you flush one there was a tendancy for them to "swap contents"
