Looking for the best company to hire a car in New York next week.
I hear so many horror stories about people getting ripped off, can anybody recomend a good company?

I'm not even sure now, if hurricane Jose will affect our trip to NY next week, so I don't want to pay for the car just yet,Nothing has been fixed since 2008, it was just pushed into the future0

Why would you want to rent a car in NYC anyway?0

Where are you planning to drive to?
Where are you expecting to park?0 -
If he's got any sense a) out of the city, thenPeacefulWaters wrote: »Where are you planning to drive to?

Have you ever driven in the US before or will this be your first time?
The reason I ask is that drivers in the states are usually fairly easy going and courteous (apart from maybe rush hour times in the cities) but IMO, this isn't the case in New York and I wouldn't recommend driving there as a first time in America.
I've driven in many different states and the only time I've seen really bad driving was in NY.
Everyone just seemed in such a hurry to get everywhere with constant horn blowing going on.
A few years old now but:

New York City, or New York state? If the former, it's pointless, as NYC has comprehensive subway and bus services. And you'll pay a fortune to park it privately, given limited street parking. No free lunch, and no free laptop

Any of the big players: Hertz, Avis, Enterprise etc.
The more important question is why you would want to rent a car? Have you tried driving in central London? Driving in New York City is 10 times worse. Not only will you sit in traffic all day long, you'll also spend $$$ on parking.
They have a great (and cheap!) subway system.
If you are going out of New York City (ie. New York State), then it would be understandable to get a car.0 -
Shaun is correct in saying that drivers are courteous in the States and the speed limit is often less than here.
We always go for an out of state number plate. At a glance, it tells other drivers that you're not local and you're given a little more leeway. Seems to work for us.
Don't even think about driving in NYC, though!Member #14 of SKI-ers club

It would also be worth considering Alamo."Such an enormous country, you realize when you cross it" - Jack Kerouac0
