Tip on how to help keep bread fresher for longer...

When I started to live with my OH he told me while I was opening a new loaf not to use the top crust but leave it on the top of the bread coz it helps to keep the whole loaf fresher - I've done it ever since and it does work :T
I hope someone will find this useful and it's not trying to teach a granny to suck eggs coz everyone does it already

Great idea, but one of my downfalls is the fresh crust, liberally spread with something
There's a white loaf in the BM atm, which I'll be having for breakfast with HM strawberry jam
Yesterday's brown loaf still has its crust keeping the cut side fresh.

My parents keep theirs in the microwave as its airtight. They swear it keeps the bread fresher longer.
Thanks to MSE, I am mortgage free!

Hi must admit it always seems to work for me too. However, on homemade bread, like penelope penguin I like the top crust off fresh baked bread with butter melted in mmm. So on homemade bread I tend to store it so fresh cut side is down, helps stop it going dry/hard.:smileyhea:heart: Mrs Lea Nov 5th '11

I buy a fresh loaf from the bakers, get them to slice it then put the whole sliced loaf in the freezer (make sure it's shaken up first and put in loosely) then whenever I want bread I just take out a slice or two, takes about an hour or two to defrost or 20 seconds in the microwave (if it's for toast just put it straight in the toaster) and tastes as good as fresh bread, lasts months and no waste :j
I can't stand the plastic, processed, pre packaged sliced bread but I'm told that also freezes well.
Also when I make sandwiches for work it's much easier in the morning to butter frozen bread. I put the filling in and it will let you cut it in half, by about 10:30 to 11am it's defrosted, then I've just got to resist eating it til lunchtime0 -

Microwaves aren't airtight I'm afraid coz we've had a couple of infestations of ants(hopefully got rid of them for good coz it's over 12 months since we last saw any - fingers crossed
)
We put food in the microwave until the next day that wouldn't fit in the fridge like a large chicken and the ants could still get to it
We think they got in through the air ducts that the microwave blew air out of to help keep it coolYou should never call somebody else a nerd or geek because everybody (even YOU !!!) is an"anorak" about something whether it's trains, computers, football, shoes or celebs:rotfl:

We just buy smaller loaves and still dont' get through it - I'm just about to turn our last half loaf to breadcrumbs :rolleyes:0

We keep it in the freezer too & just take it out as we need it otherwise we'd waste loads of bread.
We all have rolls for work/school and buy lots and freeze them in 2's and take out what we need the night before.
MY friend emigrated to New York a couple of years ago when she married and American & apparently everyone there keeps bread in the fridge!Sometimes it's important to work for that pot of gold...But other times it's essential to take time off and to make sure that your most important decision in the day simply consists of choosing which color to slide down on the rainbow...0 -

Bread is one thing you shouldn't keep in the fridge as it will shorten it's 'shelf life' rather than extend it! There's a good technical reason why but I can't remember it offhand!0 -

My flat mates and boyfriend also put their bread in the fridge too as they find it makes it last longer also.I am a vegan woman. My OH is a lovely omni guy0
