Issue with automatic gearbox - VW Golf

Hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum but I've found that there is a bunch of really helpful people. I'm quite desperate since I keep searching online for some help.

I own a Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI BlueMotion DSG 5dr and made about 52445 miles so far. I'm the second owner and I've never had trouble with this car before.

Let's cut to the case. For the past few weeks, I've experienced some clunking. Strange noise coming from somewhere where the gearbox is.

It's impossible to say exactly what it sounds like but it definitely sounds different. I can tell my beauty is in trouble. I could also describe it as some sort of humming, buzzing or whining noise.

I hope it's just tear and wear, and cars do change the sound over time, so I hope it's that.

Could someone suggest anything, perhaps there is anyone who had the same issue?

Please help.
Many thanks,
Will

VW DSG gearboxes have suffered reliability issues since first being introduced. I had one which needed major work after 12 months, this was ten years ago. A mate had a TT about 15 years ago which needed work.

Some DSG boxes are 7 speed dry clutch, some are 6 speed wet clutch and newer ones are 7 speed wet clutch. You need to know which one is fitted to your vehicle.

Despite these design changes there are still issues and I suggest you visit the various VAG car owners clubs for advice. If there is a problem it can get expensive.

Unusual noises are the first warning signs, the longer you leave it, the more expensive it will get, so try to get it looked at asap.

It is however worth having a poke around, checking levels and making sure it's not something stupid first.

If it's starting to make odd noises get it checked asap.
By carrying on driving you 'could' do additional damage.
May just need a fluid change but gearboxes are complex so best get it checked out either at a VW garage or transmission specialist.

You don't mention if it's had the suggested gearbox service at 40K?

Depending on the type it may not need one, hence my previous post.

The dry boxes still require an oil change service, it's just the clutch that is 'dry'.
  • Yes, service was done as it should.
  • Wow, so I've learned quite a lot. Thank you for this.

@daveyjp special thanks. I get that now. You've also suggested that I should visit some VAG group clubs - what does it mean really? Any which you could recommend?

@Strider590 that's done too. Unfortunately, it's not anything silly. After I read your answer, I have hoped that's the case.
