Public liability for a gardener

I'm starting a gardening business, grasscuts, weeding, hedge cutting.
I'm unsure how much cover i should get...1 million, 2 or 5?
Anyone advise? The price difference is a fair bit.

  • Think about what you're going to be working on, what's the worst that can happen?
That determines the exposure therefore what level of cover you need.
  • Domestic gardens, grass cutting and weeding mostly. So nothing that can do huge damage I don't think

Elec/Petrol lawnmover: low chance, but potential to kill/cause house fire

    Electricity cables, water, telephone

Hit a water pipe and flood a couple of houses ?
Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill
  • Possibly, although I won't be digging much, just general tidying using a fork mainly. My mower is petrol and won't in anyway be connected to the customers house unlike an electric one.

For the relatively small cost, I would invest in the insurance, potential flooding, hitting service cables, cracking pipes etc, not worth not having a decent level of cover.
  • I've just had a look at Gardener's Public Liability Insurance premiums and they start at £44 for £1M cover, £52 for £2M cover and £72 for £5M cover. Looking across stats it looks like most Gardeners take out £1 million cover.

It is always difficult to see how you could cause more than a million pounds of damage and I guess this is why most people take out £1M cover. If you do any large jobs or work at big properties then a higher lever of cover may be advised. Also, if you do any work for the council then there is a chance they will require you to have £5M cover minimum.
