Laptop won't connect, lost ip address

My laptop won't connect to the internet via our home wifi but phones and tablets can still connect. I've narrowed down the problem to my laptop somehow losing its ip address. I'm not sure what I'm doing but I've opened a command prompt window to try a few suggestions here:
https://support.microsoft.com/en-gb/help/10741/windows-10-fix-network-connection-issues
but they are not working like they should.
Is there anything else I could try first? I'm not sure if there has been any recent windows updates that might have caused this problem. Thanks

Turn off the other device that stole the IP.
Turn off all devices and reset the router and make sure the laptop is the first to connect.Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...0 -
^^ Give that a go.
I've very occasionally had problems where (for unknown reasons) a device repeatedly fails to get an IP address via the router's DHCP even though all the settings are correct.
So if you repeatedly have problems, try reserving a fixed IP address for the laptop in the router's settings.0 -
A friend lost WiFi connectivity on her Acer laptop a couple of weeks ago, fairly new laptop with Windows 10. It was a recent Microsoft Windows update that fouled up the WiFi/Bluetooth adapter. You might look at that as a source of the problem.0

Thanks for your suggestions. I've been using an alternative device in the meantime due to work pressure but now need to get the laptop connected again. Before I try out these suggestions, are they for the situation where, when I look at the settings, the space where the ip address *should* be written is completely blank?0

Try this:
At the command prompt type: netsh winsock reset catalog and press [Enter].
Next type: netsh int ip reset reset.log and press [Enter].
Restart your PC for the changes to take effect.0 -
Check under Device Manager that your WiFi adapter is present and correct. Windows updates may have installed the wrong driver for it.0

^^ This .
But first you have to ensure you have an elevated command prompt.
Type CMD into the search box, RIGHT click on the offering that says "command prompt" and then choose "run as administrator".
Type the above stuff into the black box that appears.
Then follow it with
ipconfig /renew
