Covering up granite fireplace

We have recently moved into our first home and have decorated the living room with a light grey/ off white decor. We had a horrible orangey wood and beigey granite fireplace. We experimented with painting the wood and it looks great. A semi matt black. We now are trying to find a solution to covering the granite which doesnt go with the new decor. People have suggested some sticky back plastic type of thing or adhesive tiles from stick and go. The fireplace is unused and disconnected. We want to have a go before we decide whether to change the fireplace! What do you think?

I think it would look too bland if you just painted the granite.

I've seen adverts for companies who overlay a thin layer of granite over existing kitchen work tops - I wonder if that would be do-able?

Alternatively, could you cover the granite with natural tiles in a lighter colour?

Overlaying what is there is pointless.

You could buy a new hearth and backpiece for the same, I'm sure.

You could even get something less beige from ebay. There will be people selling second hand fireplaces on there if funds are tight. It's not hard to change over a non-working fireplace.

Might have been better to think about before the wallpaper going on, but the mantlepiece should screw off.
