Mad cow Disease

How many of you are still not eating beef since the scare or beef related products. I ask because I fancied putting an oxo cube into my minced beef, looked in cupboard and found some with the use by date May 05, if they're going on the turn I'm going to be in double jeopardy:D

I never stopped eating beef, mainly because I reckon if I've got it, I'd have contracted it before all the scares. Also, I've always tried to eat decent quality meat. I know that that in itself is no guarantee, but hey, there's not much I can do if I've got it. I think we're fairly safe in recent years but I still choose British meat over foreign.

I was going through a vegaterian phase at the time anyway so avoided it until about 2 years ago when hubby finally broke down my defences with hamburgers:o

Wouldn't use an oxo cube to save my life though, yuck. Sorry Needmoney

    Still eat beef.
by the time the scare came the damage would have been done already.
Also it never turned out to be such a monstruous epidemic , so it was very very bad luck for a few.
Use the cubes, but mostly vegetables and sometimes chicke.

Is there any beef in OXO? Serious question ... I don't use it, so don't know, but I'd be very surprised if it actually contains anything connected with beef. Always thought it was a chemical mix, but happy to be proved wrong :)

My own view is that the terror of BSE resulted in new measures to control beef production and we now have the safest, and BEST, beef in the world. And it's raised to the highest animal welfare standards, which is more than can be said for a lot of beef produced elsewhere. Watch out for the "cheap" beef sold by many supermarkets - check the label - is it British?

The standards for Assured British Beef cover the farm, feed, market, transport & abbatoir. Details HERE, which links to the Assured British Meat website.

I try to keep HM stock in the freezer - for beef stock you need to get a bone from the butcher and then make stock as you would with a chicken carcass.

You can thicken HM stock quite simply with a bit of cornflour.

I'm with Ticklemouse re: the scare/British meat.

It contains beef extract ... (info from Oxo and Design Tech ) and if anyone is interested, you can read a brief History of Oxo

And any decent butcher will give you a bone for free - especially if you've also bought something ;)

Rib of beef - great roast, great gravy, great stock.

Bu88er - you've got me thinking now about the weekend. I'll have to give in and order one now (houseful of guests )

As a family, we haven't eaten beef since the 80's! My husband has been known to order a steak on a night out and my teenage daughter occasionally had a burger when out with mates. After watching Jamie Oliver's school meal programme, she now won't eat anything like a burger or nugget!
I have found minced lamb a good alternative to beef for spag bol etc and we usually eat "farm-assured" chicken and pork. Legs of lamb or joints of smoked ham for a treat.
We're meat-free for about 3 days a week, but still have a family sit-down meal every night.
"Cheap", "Fast", "Right" -- pick two.
