Tax Credits for 18 year old student

My son was 18 in March 2005 and is still in full time education (taking his A levels next month). He intends to go to university next September.

I presently get child and working tax credit and wonder when I will cease to get any money for him.

On the tax credit site it says -
a person aged 16, 17 or 18 who is in full time education, normally studying at school or college for at least 12 hours a week for a qualification, at or below NVQ Level 3, A Level or Scottish Advanced Highers.

So thats ok - he fits into that category.

It also says-

Note 1 - If a person has left full time education you can continue to receive tax credits for that person for a further 20 weeks, provided they have registered with either their local Careers Service or Connexions Service. Tax credits will discontinue if that person reaches their 18th birthday within the 20 weeks.

Now I am wondering when full time education ends - is it when his last exam is? when he gets his results? or when he starts uni?

Probably a silly question but! Does it matter that he has a part time job (rarely pays tax though due to low earnings)?

Hope someone can help :)

I would be interested in the reply. I had the same situation and despite notifying IR of all the details and dates, they continued to pay me CTC until the end of March. I calculate that I have about 8 months of credits to pay back but have now decided just to wait for them to ask, I am fed up chasing them.

I personally would assume from when Child bendfit ends.

Which will the september after that 18th Birthday unless they re-take exams and then september after there 19th Birthday.

But you I think you need to talk to the IR though.

My son is 19 in a couple of weeks and it all stops the day after his 19th birthday.

He did GCSE's at school, 1 year foundation course then 2 year BTEC National Diploma(euqivalent to A Levels) + 1 A Level and has Uni place for September.

I have also posted a question today re when he can sign on and he will be "potless" (his words!) for a few weeks, any replies to which might be handy for your kids too.

    Regards, Stella
