Dubious doubling of internet speed

My ISP offered to upgrade my current broadband speed by effectively doubling it. I waiting a week and received a message today telling me to turn off my computer and router, turn them on again and voila! my connection speed would be doubled. Instead, I can no longer connect to the Internet or pick up my email. (Thank God for my back up dial up service!)
I tried using a slave computer, which connects to the router via a wireless adaptor, but no go. Ergo sum there must be a hitch somewhere that I am not seeing. It has to be the Netgear 54 Mbps ADSL Firewall Router, doesn't it? Anybody have any cheaper suggestions than I would get by calling the 50p a minute support line?

My connection has doubled today from 1mb to 2mb. I have had problems too speeds have been slow, despite rebooting router several times. Just reset router (netgear DG384G) and things have improved. Try that.
No longer a user, goodbye folks. PLEASE delete my account. Thank you0 -
Check the wireless setup is correct in the router and the PC.
I had the speed increase done in March, I use the same router and have had no problems with the wireless.Hug provider for depression thread :grouphug:

In frustration, I phoned the ISP. They admited it was their fault! To add insult to injury, I had to use a premium rate phone line to tell them!! They apparently knew all about it and immediately told me what to do. What cheek...
But thanks for all your suggestions, we tried them all.0 -
what did they tell you to do about it? i've been having router problems recently?
what ISP are you on?0 -
Virgin.
We were asked to do nothing. They had to tweak it their end. The girl muttered something about their equipment not being able to recognise the new faster link as that of an existing customer.0
