Windows updates took ages

I knew something was wrong this morning, because my Desktop normally boots up in less than 15 seconds.
It was of course the dreaded "Windows updates".
It took over twenty minutes to complete, inclusing three restarts.
Has anyone else had problems with the latest updates?

that's normal with win10. updates are a positive thing imo

I agree, but it would be helpful if there was some indication of how long the update will take and give you a choice whether to do it then or at another time: if you need to send an email in the next 10 minutes then finding that updates are hogging your computer for 20 minutes is not great.

I don't have W10 but I remember (I think) reading on here that you can set a time for updates to be executed.

Have you set active hours to prevent unwelcome restarts? There are a variety of options available since the creator's update to minimise the invasive impact of restarts.

Which version of Windows?
You should set active hours (you specify upto 18** hours when Windows 10 will NOT do a restart).

I don't think I've ever had an update take 20 minutes apart from the yearly majors and even then they are only just around that mark.

The only updates ever AFAIK that take the best part of 20 minutes and three reboots are:

Windows Vista Service Pack 1
The initial upgrade to Windows 10 from Windows 7 or 8
Changing from one Windows 10 version to a newer one
(occasionally) some updates on shutdown under Windows 7 but this behaviour was more common on Windows 8

The latest Windows 10 version 1703 update was OS Build 15063.540 on 8th August! OP must be running something outside the mainstream.

Mine updated yesterday, however I haven't used the machine for a few weeks. It took a long time.

That one has been gradually rolling out since about April, with Microsoft deliberately spreading out when people get the updates. 8th August is presumably the date when your machine was updated but some people will be significantly before or after that date.
