Petrol vs Diesel vs LPG vs Hybrid - pure math

Over last 10 years of all money I spent on car depreciation, petrol and insurance, I spent roughly 60% on fuel, 30% on insurance and less than 10% on car depreciation and repairs.
Therefore I am thinking very carefully on how to reduce mpg on my next car.

Here is my question:
If I spent £100 driving a petrol car 70% in town and 30% on motorway, how much on average would I spend driving same type of car on same route but:
- with a diesel engine
- with LPG
- hybrid (and not plug in hybrid)

Diesel saves typically around 40% over petrol.

LPG saves typically around 45% over petrol.

    Hybrid, don't know.

All the above based purely on the cost of fuel/MPG, not any other differences.

  • for figures to work, would be good to know:-

    average miles pa.
    how new were the cars?
    average mpg.

over the last 10 years, my biggest cost has been vehicle deprecation.

Also on Hybrid, you'd need to consider whether plug in or other hybrid. If plug-in, you'd need to consider the costs of charging it on leccy

But diesel isn't going to give those savings with 70% town driving.

no, but will still be a significant saving, probably more like 30%. I do most of my driving on the 30mile round trip to work which is much closer to the extra urban pattern, and have just changed from a 1.4L petrol to a 1.4l diesel and am expecting a 50%-ish increase in mpg on that journey (I can get 60mpg in a 2ltr Mondeo TD just doing that run, the 1.4 should get 65+)

If it was 70% town I'd expect 30-35% improvement as the diesel won't get up to and maintain efficient temp so easily around town.

But the OP said "hybrid (and not plug in hybrid)"
