The fact is that she has, in the past, paid NI contributions and should have been credited with contributions whilst at home raising children and in receipt of family allowance (that was the old name for it).

Has she got away of getting in touch with previous employers ?, they may still have the relevant payroll records.

Try contacting HMRC with regards to thenumber, they have a tema who trace records. Whne I used to deal with them I did come across cases that I refered to them of people who had worked their whole life and paid NI without a valid NI number. Usually what happened was that an NI number was issued and then when the relevant missing record was traced the NI was credited to the correct number along with the HRP records.

The main HMRC switchboard number is 0191 2135000. The section that you need is the Account Investigation Section secrion of NICO.
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
• CIS, thanks for your suggestion, however, the employer no longer exists and has not done so for some years, it was a small family owned business that eventually fell by the commercial wayside.
The tracing team at HMRC, (reference ABW Team 5 BP3001, if that means anything to anyone) seem to be the ones who said that an NI number had obviously never been issued.
They do not appear to have searched very thoroughly, nor spent much time as the reply was very swift. Perhaps its easier for them to take the easy way out.
It seems to us to be a strange situation that a person can have a UK birth certificate, educational records, marriage certificate, passport and EHIC and yet not be traceable even though contributions were paid and subsequently family allowance payments received.

Hi Netball,
I telephoned today using 0845 915 5996 this is the National Insurance Deficiency Helpline (open 8am to 8pm)
I gave them my details and was told immediately that I could "pay back 2 years, and the amounts that I would have to repay. She then gave me another telephone number, 0845 6060265 Pension Department and was told
to give them the details oif the 2 years, and to ask them if it would be worthwhile for me to claim, or rather repay the 2 years. Unfortunately no one was available to look into my details today as they were all on a training day! I was told that someone would phone me back later. As yet I haven't heard from them.

Good luck with your claim! gosh will I celebrate if I get anything:beer:
but somehow I very much doubt it!

• Hi Steve - ABW stands for 'additional business workstream' they take on the overflow work during the evenings. Bp3002 is just their room number. Try calling 0845 915 7006 this is the national insurance registrations line who can trace NI numbers, or you can contact a local job center plus and they 'should be able to do the trace.......sometimes they dont.......
Gatita - keep trying the tel no, they are usually pretty good!

Update
As expected nobody phoned me surprise surprise:p I phoned them and was kept hanging on for 35 minutes, I was then told...."you must contact the RDMPT department direct" (don't ask me what that stands for:rolleyes: ) tel 08456006669. This I did and was told yes I could repay 2 years £335 40 and £340.60 I was told they would write to me in about 6 weeks time!!!! to let me know exactly if anything I could claim/get and if it was worthwhile.
Has anyone ANY idea how much if anything I could get please. I am 67 and at the moment all I receive is the princely sum of £25 p.w. so anything at all would be great.
Good luck to anyone else claiming, and do use the above number as this is the direct number, IF you are owed any money they will deduct what you have to pay them, from any money they owe you.

• Thanks Janienewcastle, will pursue that route as suggested.

Yes you will be entitled to a pension in your own right from aged 60.Make sure if appropriate that you are credited with extra years for staying at home looking after the children.

If your pension is less than 60% of what your husband gets when he turns 65,they will top your pension up to that level at that time.

As you will reture before 2010, you can get a forecast now of what you will get, and check that the years credited are correct here:

Flipping heck. that's depressing. I am 54 and I have to work till I am 63 and a half to get my state pension. Over 9 years.

Just thought I would give an update. I contacted the National Insurance Deficiency Helpline in February and gave them all the info. they required, they said that I could pay back 2 years probably and that someone would contact me in a few weeks.

2 MONTHS later I telephoned them again asking if there was any news on my claim, I was told they were very busy etc etc and to wait another few weeks.

In June once more I telephoned them........ this time i was told that I should be hearing soon from the Pension Service, but that as I had received MIG for some years, I would have to pay this back out of any claim I may have! This really is a JOKE!!!
It is now August and I am STILL waiting to hear from ANYONE..
Has anyone else waited so long, or do I hold the record?:o
