Car insurance conundrum - switching main driver after a month

Hi everyone,
Looking for some car insurance advice as I'm in a bit of a complex situation.
I have a full clean driving licence but haven't owned a car since passing my test almost ten years ago and haven't been on an insurance policy so have no no claims discount or bonus to protect I don't think.
My partner has a provisional licence and is due to sit his test in October. He's never had insurance as has so far just had lessons with an instructor.
We would like to buy a car for him to practice in with me, and then drive once he passes. So we need insurance for me as the main driver in the period before he passes, with him as a learner driver, but then once he passes he will be the main driver.
We were planning for him to get short-term learner insurance, but I don't want to shell out for a year's worth of insurance for me when I won't be the main driver after a month.
Does that make sense? is it possible to buy annual insurance with me as main driver, but then switch it (and pay any additional costs) once my partner passes?
Thanks!

Yes.
Bear in mind that the premium will rise considerably after he passes.
And check with your chosen insurer that they will continue to cover him once he passes before you buy0
