A standard 4oz flour, 4oz sugar, 4oz butter, 2 egg mix in a greased pudding basin is going to take between 6-8 minutes depending on your microwave. The top of the sponge should still be slightly tacky to the touch if you wait until it the top is dry you have over-cooked it. Always eat micro sponge immediately it doesn't store or re-heat well. Hello - I want to make a microwave sponge to take to a friends for dinner tonight. If I make it now (12midday) (or in the next 3 hours or so) will it still be good around 6pm? I can reheat there if necessary. I don't want to take round a floppy, soggy pudding!
Thanks,
Love Di x0 -
seeing as it never takes more than 30 mins to cook a full sized sponge cake in the micro, might it be an idea to take the raw mix in a bowl and cook it in their microwave. you can enjoy the smell of it cooking, and get to enjoy fresh warm cake - yummy!!!know thyselfNid wy'n gofyn bywyd moethus...0

Hi Diana,
I would think it's best just cooked too. There's an earlier thread on microwave sponge puddings that may help so I've added your question to it to keep the replies together.

I tried the 5 min cake in a mug and it was really sickly and stodgy.
May well have been because I used Twinings Rich Chocolate drink mix instead of cocoa which I didn't have in, so I may try that again the correct way.
Anyway, whilst searching for mug in a cake stuff I found this unbelievably easy treacle pudding (don't know why we call it treacle pudding when it is actually syrup and not treacle that is used) which took 3 mins in my 900 watt microwave.
So, here are the handful of ingredients which most of us have in the cupboard.
1 egg, sugar, self raising flour, butter/marg and syrup.
Ok, this is how easy it is but you may be better off using digital scales as you will be using really small amounts to make one pudding which is big enough for two people.
Take one egg without cracking it and weigh it, remember, don't break it just stick the egg on the scales and weigh it.
I used a medium egg which weighed 55 grams.
Weigh out the exact same weight in self raising flour, sugar (just normal everyday sugar) and butter.
Mix everything together including the egg (I used a cereal bowl which was more than big enough), I also melted the butter first in the microwave so that it was easier to mix with the other ingredients. I just used a fork to stir everything together.
Once mixed together it should have no lumps and looks a lot like baby food!
Get a cereal bowl (make sure it is microwave proof) and smear a bit of butter all around it so that the cake will be easier to come out (although mine still seemed to stick).
Put a dollop of golden syrup in the bottom of the cereal bowl and pour the cake mixture on top.
Cover with clingfilm and microwave on high for 3 mins.
Now that is what I read, but it did not say what the wattage was.
I cooked it for 3 mins in a 900 watter and it was fine so I think it may be a bit of trial and error if you have a different wattage.
Just cook till it puffs up and is springy to the touch.
I made up a packet of the 9p instant custard from Mr T's and it was lovely.
Not up to the standard of a bought one of course but hey, it was edible, cheap and took 3 mins.
Our 9 year old is a right fussy little eater, she tried it and said it was gorgeous so it must have been ok.
Go on guys, get in the kitchen and give it a go, I want to know how other people get on with it.
PS
I suppose you could use jam or chocolate sauce etc in the bottom instead of syrup.0 -
Mix everything together including the egg (I used a cereal bowl which was more than big enough)
just use the pan for the scales to mix it in , saves having to wash another dish. or if not planning on 'turning out', just make in the bowl you are gonna cook it in
There have been alot of threads lately about making sponge puddings in the microwave, which i find strange, as i thought this was the only way people made sponge puddings nowadays. who has the time to put the steamer on for 2 hrs. ok the sponge isnt as fluffy, but for 3mins you cant beat it. And a 2oz mix is more than enough for a family of 4
you can basically make any flavour, so spotted !!!!!!, chocolate, jam and coconut, syrup, blackberry and apple.
I tend to make this pud as we clear the table, as invariably the kids ask whats for afties, and i havent prepared anything. so its a good last minute pud
