Travel Insurance - Pre-existing conditions

It's a slight mystery to me what is classed as a pre-existing condition. On one online search it was 2 years since you had symptoms on another it was 4.

I also read that if you do not disclose a pre-existing condition and make a claim insurance companies can't refuse the claim if it's unrelated.

Can anyone clarify?

    Different companies have different criteria.

So you can find different timescales being asked about.

If you have some condition you don't want to be insured for then discuss it with your chosen insurer.

Many will let you take out a policy that excludes cover for any claim associated with the condition

And what is a pre-existing condition? A friend of mine had an issue with an insurance claim as a cough was classed as pre-existing

    FOS definition:
Pre-existing conditions are medical conditions that existed before an insurance policy was taken out.

(A cough is a medical condition - that could be minor or major!)

So if a condition in the past (over 2 or 4 years ago/depending on the policy) is not a condition when you take out the insurance then it's not pre existing?

    Not necessarily.

Some conditions have to be disclosed no matter how long ago they developed (again depending on insurer) eg. heart problems/breathing problems/psychiatric issues/etc.

And that cough from a year ago?

Depends on the claim - why was it considered significant (assuming the insurer found out about it from a medical report over a claim)?

The insurance company initially refused a claim of I think Broncitus and following on complications when the person went to the Dr's with a bog standard cough. In the end they paid up, just as well, the person became I'll in the US and involved various flights paid
