New front door - Awkward size and fitting

Hi all,

We are looking at getting a new front door supplied and fitted ASAP. Had a quote for a composite door of around £1500 which is nice BUT we'd apparently need to isolate and move some of the central heating pipes which run close to the top of the door frame for them to fit a new frame in. That is at an extra cost.
The pipes do not actually fit to the frame, and the shape of the room/location of the door is a little tricky to describe but we don't really want to touch the pipes.

I don't think we really need a new frame, and i don't want to spend that much money on a new front door.
The composite door company said we would need a new frame for their guarantees etc.

The door we have is an awkward size. I have looked and seen that some types of doors can be trimmed to fit, but to allow enough to be trimmed in height, the width is then no enough. To get it wide enough it is then too tall to trim off what we need. Hope you understand what i mean there...

Perhaps i am doing something really wrong with my searches.

Can anyone recommend where to find a decent front door? The size is 1930MM x 850MM.
Preferably we would want one that can be trimmed to fit the existing frame.

P.S is it difficult to fit a new front door ourselves..? Trying to save money wherever we can.
Thanks!

P.s.p.s The door is North west facing and takes a thrashing from the rain, not sure if that affects the type of door we should choose.

Composite doors should be fitted with matching frame. I would suggest you look for a reliable joiner to supply and fit a wooden door.

  • Unless you have a solid wood door already and a wooden frame and intend to replace it with another solid wood door, any new door is going to need a new frame that is manufactured to go with it. Composite, uPVC and metal doors all seem to be manufactered as "sets" - door and frame manufactured together to fit the existing hole in the wall. Wooden doors can be bought off the shelf to fit standard frame sizes and if you're handy with a wood chisel can be fitted yourself (if you're not, then hanging a front door is probably not the first project you should undertake, as it is not a trivial task to get right).

    Thanks for the replies.
We have a wooden stable door at the moment. I'm not really bothered by what type of door goes in as replacement (albeit reliant on cost), although it seems it is probably easier to replace with another wooden door if we don't have to replace the frame and worry about moving the central heating pipes.

As much as we would love a shiny new composite door, it's on the side of a front extension so wouldn't really offer any extra 'curb appeal' as it's not visible until you walk up the garden path.

I think we are going to contact a local Joiner to see what they recommend to be done. Hopefully another door can be made-to-measure or cut down to fit!
