I know this is an old thread, but not all advertising leads to a direct sale, but getting your name/logo out there is important - how many vans do you see with contact details on? How many people make a note of those details and phone the company based on that information? How many people see those vans? How many people see those cards in a supermarket? (Granted not that many if it's still at the back of the store in an area of low footfall). How many people will take a card, pass it to a friend who then calls but doesn't mention that the details came from a card - they will say a friend told them.......

The key to advertising is getting your name/logo out there to be seen - worn on Tshirts, on vehicles, flyers etc. Somebodyhas to see a logo 6 times (I seem to remember) before they tie it in with the company, so millions spend on one big advert wont be as effective as the same amount spent on a hundred vehicles being driven around one small town.....
Please forgive me if my comments seem abrupt or my questions have obvious answers, I have a mental health condition which affects my ability to see things as others might.

There are plenty of website directories on the internet where you can place a free entry which will come up when people google you or your trade and area.

Try https://www.freeindex.co.uk https://www.smilelocal.co.uk and sheriffratings there are a few others. A lot of people use search engines eg google now days to find businesses so its a great way and free to get customers

I've always wondered about the logic of trying to sell your goods or services to people who save their money on supermarket savings cards.

Not that I'm suggesting there's anything wrong with people saving in that way if they wish, but it's a curious target market!

  • I have had cards in a few stores from this company (Windsor / Servicelink) with mixed results
Homebase Ayr- Made money back (just) - Reason- Nobody in Ayr wants to call a Kilmarnock number (local thing)

Homebase Kilmanrock (1-2 calls a week) pays for itself - am resigning again

Homebase Irvine (1-2 calls a week) pays for itself - am resigning again

Focus Kilmarnock - store shut 3 months in, company refunded money in about 1 week.

Before I took out advert I called the electrician advertising and asked him how he found the ad. His reply was he got his money back, but wouldn't repeat it.

The business card dispenser has benefits- my customers know where to get my card.
I have the kids trained to pick up a couple when they walk by

Advertising is what you make it. I designed the cards myself, they used my artwork as I wanted it all just so. The result was my card was more noticible on the rack.

It all depends where you are and what works in your area. I used the BT book years ago and found it a waste of money.
Yellow pages is OK, Thomson Local is good as well.
    baldly going on...
  • I wasted £180 on a magazine advert...man I'm so ashamed, got 1 enquiry though, it went to 5000 people

To cut a long story short..

When myself and my mom set up in business (Seperatly) two years ago, we were approached by a company called Windsor Associates, who managed to get us to advertise with them in our local tesco store. Our cards were placed around the saving stamps machine. How many enquires have we had in two years??? 0.
Not one enquiry for either company in two Years:mad:

The thing that irrates me the most is before we agreed on this they said that they would be re-locating the stamp machines by the front doors so that more people would look at them. This never happened its still out of the way at the back of the store.

They have just sent me an invoice for my fifth instalment, I wont be in a hurry to pay that.

The Lesson to new people in business - DO NOT get sucked into paying for advertising because someone says it will get you work and enquires.

    Interested to hear your feedback.

We run an aesthetics business (botox etc) and just been approached by these guys about advertising in a new tesco store. Must admit it seemed like a good idea - loads of people in tesco etc. It wasnt too expensive (about £40/month) but if we get zero business I guess it is!
