partial week car insurance?

I dont know if this type of insurance even exists.. but does anyone in the know have any idea if its possible to get a car insurance scheme for mon-friday only?

The last time I had insurance from tesco it was £1200pa (1year licence and age 21).. however my old banger of a car was written off (WHILE CORRECTLY PARKED IN A PARKING BAY) by some muppet driving his dads car dangerously. Then I moved house and couldn't afford another car and insurance so I didnt even get my 1years no claims as I had to cancel the policy due to lack of a car ;)

.. I'm still 21 with a clean licence and am trying to make it more financially feasible to some sort of transport and insurance so as I only need a car for work I was wondering whether anyone possibly offers a scheme for week day insurance only and shave some of the cost off it -- anyone ever heard of such a thing or am I wasting my time?

thanks for any info :)

I can't see that a Monday-Friday insurance cover would be feasible. I've certainly never heard of it.

There would be all sorts of problems with the third party cover that is a legal requirement. You would need to have the vehicle off the road on the Saturday and Sunday - and probably need to get this agreed by DVLA. This isn't going to happen!

Even if that were resolved, you wouldn't have any theft cover for the Saturday or Sunday. What happens if the car were stolen over the weekend? No cover.

Then there would be the potential for fraud - alleging that an accident or a theft took place during the week when cover was in force (when in fact the incident took place at the weekend).

In any event, the sheer cost of such a policy (even if it were possible) would probably be as expensive (or even more so) than a standard policy.

If you want to save some money in insurance, firstly shop around for cover. Then, you can reduce your cover to third party fire and theft or even third party only - not ideal, but at least you would be driving around legally.

Hope that this makes some sense. I've had to reply in a bit of a rush.

The only policy anything like what you're after that I've heard is from Norwich Union, and it's a pay per mile one for new drivers, possibly with an age limit too. they fit a black box into your car boot which registers how many miles you drive and at what times of day. You get charged more for 'late at night' miles. the idea is that it makes insurance 'affordable' for new drivers, but there's some concerns about how much it might actually work out to. And if you're not the only driver then how do they know who's driving?

BTW, it's sometimes cheaper to find an older driver with a good record to add to your policy, even if you never let them drive the car. Vital that you are named as the main driver, however!

Good points, both. The NU scheme wouldn't necessarily help that much, as you are talking about NOT using the car at weekends - when it's generally less buys and hence presumably lower risk for the insurer. Most insurers will charge you less on the basis of fewer miles, and I think that's as close as you are going to get to what you want.

Nobody uses the car all the time, and it is only at risk of accident while being used. Whilst other types of insurance (eg aircraft - ground risks only) may have lay-up clauses I think it extremely unlikely you'll find anything.

You've obviously never had your car driven into while it was parked, or had the windscreen smashed with a baseball bat while it was parked, or had the lock damaged during an attempted break-in, or an actual theft ... :D But you make a good point, we all think the OP will be jolly lucky to find 'weekdays only' cover!

I've never heard of such a thing either.

If you do find one you could also tell the DVLA to start doing weekday car tax!!!
