Bids being cancelled

I ask on behalf of my father in law who is new to Ebay and not tech savvy.

He has a new ebay account linked to paypal with a valid debit card on that as well, all his name and address and mobile are in the my ebay pages on his account.

Over the weekend he was trying to bid on a van (hence the new account) but the seller kept cancelling his bids, using the reason "i cannot verify the identity of the buyer"

There was no mention of zero feed back accounts not being allowed to bid.

We're we doing something wrong ? is there something else we should fill in ? or did the buyer just not want to deal with us ?

There are a number of reasons why this might be happening:

    1) The seller doesn't like zero feedback buyers
    2) the seller is hoping people will somehow circumvent the system and buy direct and so doesn't want any bids
    3) The telephone number your FIL added is wrong so buyer is properly using the wrong contact details to cancel bids (although I'm not sure that sellers can now get telephone numbers of a bidder before the auction ends due to the new rules)
    4) He doesn't like your FILs user name (I only say this as someone on a seller forum was asking only this week about cancelling a bid based purely on a rather strange user name that in her culture could be considered anti female)

    There's plenty more reasons.

  • contact the seller and ask for their side of the story. If you provide them with a telephone number, they can contact you to express a genuine interest.

Asking for a phone number/offering a phone number is the perfect way to get both accounts (buyer and seller) restricted.

OP, just send the seller a message asking why the bids are being removed as you are genuinely interested in bidding.

Please note theonlywayisup's post- this is now very very important. On the outside chance that a buyer can find a way of getting a phone number across, doing it via ebay messages is likely to get both the buyer- and unfairly in my opinion, the seller a warning. Ebay are very very hot on items potentially being sold outside of ebay now. I have a warning on my account purely because a buyer was trying to arrange to collect something and pay cash when I had immediate payment enabled.

If however the seller is a business then their contact details should be available somewhere under business information, and using either a private email or phone number would work as ebay would not know about the contact.
