Car Insurance. 1 month until 3 NCD

Hi,

I wanted to get some advice from you guys. I’ve had a car accident recently. It wasn’t my fault by the way so I’m not going to lose my no claims discount but I’ve had 1 month until 3 years of NCD. Now I’m stuck with 2 years and 11 months. Every car insurer allows me to choose between 2 or 3 years but I obviously can’t choose 3 in this case. Did you have similar experience or have a clue what to do in such situation?

why not continue with your current policy?...you may have an admin fee and additional premium (depending on group of old and new car) but there should be no need to get a new policy with a different company unless your current insurer will not insure the new vehicle

If the claim was made against your own insurer then you will normally have your NCD impacted until your insurer is fully reimbursed by the liable third party insurer.

If that is the case you will now (temporarily) have nil NCD.

If your insurer has been reimbursed in full then you will have 3 years NCD at renewal time in one month

What happens if I get a car this saturday. What if I have to insure it? I don’t want to choose a more expensive policy with my current insurer while others offer one for £100-200 less. If I choose a policy with another insurer can I select 2 years of NCD? Can I pay monthly and then they’re going to decrease my monthly payments when I hit th3 3 NCD?

Did you claim off your own insurer?

If you intend buying a new policy on Saturday then you should check with your insurer about your NCD. See if it has been temporarily reduced to nil as advised above.

If it has then you have no NCD to take to a new insurer.

If your NCD is not impacted by your claim, then you have 2 years NCD to use on Saturday

They’ve said that they’re going to put my NCD 'on hold' until my claim is sorted. Not sure when that’s going to happen though. What do you reckon I shall do? I need a new car.

If your new car is acceptable to your current insurer then you can replace your "old" car with the new one and complete your year to have your 3 years NCD.

Then (depending on whether you do have 3 years to use at renewal as discussed above) you can move to a new insurer.

If you decide to go with a new insurer on Saturday then (assuming your NCD has not been temporarily lost) you would have to cancel the current policy to be able to use your 2 years NCD.

You can't use NCD on two different policies.

You will have to wait until you complete another full year without claiming to get to 3 years NCD if you go with a new insurer on Saturday

On hold means nil Ncd to use now as described.

You have nil Ncd to use on a new policy until your insurer reinstates it.

You are stuck with your current insurer if you want to use your NCD.

(If they won't allow you to use it at renewal then they will adjust the premium once the NCD is reinstated)

Next time you are involved in a claim where you are not to blame and there is a liable third party then you avoid all this problem by not claiming off your own insurer but claiming directly off the third party. No excess to pay and reclaim either if you do that!

If you have had a no fault claim, surely the other persons insurer will pay for a replacement car until your is fixed.

My car is a write-off. I’ve used a hire vehicle provided by the solicitors but I’ve had to return it because I’ve received the total loss cheque. I’ve been left with no car now.

The only thing that is reasonable is stay with my current insurer and change the vehicle on the policy. I can’t afford a new policy with no NCD on it.
