Free school lunch claim

I want to claim free school lunch, but don't know what to use to prove eligibility

I need to ask income support for a letter?

Or will my bank statements with income support payments be enough?

Wouldn't you be best reading the forms or asking the people who deal with the claims?

Have you checked the local authority's website? Ours does the application online so you could have a look there if yours does.

Now that schools are reopening for the autumn term you could ask there what they need. It's generally processed locally so just ask at the school office.

You'll only need to do it for children who are junior or secondary age because the government did a U-turn on FSM for infants so they're still free for all children.

Schools do like parents who are eligible for FSM to register though (whether planning to claim or not) as the number of pupils eligible for FSM affects their funding etc.
  • There is normally a form for you to complete with your NI number and DoB and the school will use a checking service to see if you are eligible.

It depends what part of the country the op is in, infants in Wales don't get free school meals.

I have the forms to bring in tomorrow

All it says is to bring in proof of your eligibility

Kim going to try my banks statements which show income support

But they may insist on a letter from I.S

Even if your child is getting free meals because they are KS1still apply for it if you match the requirements in the UK - being marked as a 'Free School Meal child' will mean the child will be eligible for pupil premium funding which is extra money the school will receive from the gov towards their education. (plus once they then go into year 3 theyll go straight to recieving free school meals and you wont have to deal with the paperwork then :) )
