Moving to manchester - affordable rural areas to rent/buy

I'm looking to start a new job in Manchester that will require me to relocate. Ive previously lived in sale but disliked the area. Too many people, too much noise, etc, combined properties...

I would ideally like some place rural within a one hour commute. I see most people prefer semi-rural and I dont see many true options or house prices for rural areas, at least without having to buy a farm. Ideally I would be looking to rent and later buy in 2-3 years time.

What should I look for? Any advice?

    What is your budget?
How long is commutable and how will you be commuting?

There are places like Poynton/Woodford - a lot quieter than Sale, a little further out but quite expensive. Knutsford, even parts of Warrington are also not a million miles away, but may take more than an hour if you a driving in rush hour.

Its hard to find 'true' rural within an hour's commute of a major city, most rural options are going to be in villages that are full of commuters like yourself and they tend to want a few amenities!

You could look at Saddleworth, that's popular with people who work in Manchester but want to live somewhere more rural. Most of the towns on the outskirts have rural areas just beyond, Bolton, Bury, Wigan, Rochdale, Ashton etc. Or as above you can go into the more rural parts of Cheshire but then you might find your commute goes above an hour with the traffic, and the prices are high!

A friend lived in Rishworth for a while, easy access to the moors and in good traffic conditions about 45 minutes to the centre of Manchester (although obviously in heavy traffic on a snowy day it might take a lot longer to do the journey).

Go north of Manchester. Bury, Ramsbottom, or even further Rawtenstall. Very rural and much cheaper than busy south Manchester.

There are some decent areas on the north eastern fringes of Warrington, eg Culcheth. It's not too far from the M62 so a drive in would be within your hour. Or you could drive to Birchwood and catch one of the very regular trains.
  • I would say a lot would depend on the area of Sale you lived in. Some areas of Sale are quieter than others.

I've lived around Sale and Altrincham for 10 years now (currently in West Timperley just off Sinderland Road) and I wouldn't have said that the area was too busy/too many people - and I grew up in a farming village in the middle of nowhere!

On the south Manchester side, you would likely be looking somewhere like Dunham Massey or Warburton. Possibly Rixton or Glazebrook may be an option, being on the A57 between Eccles and Warrington, but other than that I am not sure you'd be within an easy commute. The traffic congestion these days means that you could take an easy hour getting from Sale/Altrincham to the middle of Manchester city centre in rush hour by car.

Thank you everyone for the feedback.

I work close to Altrincham, so an up to 1h commute, by car, would give me plenty of opportunities to go far into the south of Manchester.

I'm ideally looking for a house, detached, and not close to a main road.

Price wise depends much on the property and location, I'm guessing somewhere up to 800pm would be reasonable, just because pretty much anything below will not match my criteria (house, detached, away from main road)
  • If you're working in Altrincham, then I would definitely suggest considering the areas around Lymm, Warburton and Dunham.

Otherwise, if you want even more rural, you could consider the likes of Ashley, Mere, Little Bollington, Mobberley and the villages scattered around Northwich.

The new A556 link road between Junction 19 of the M6 and Junction 7 of the M56 makes for a pretty quick trip between Northwich and Altrincham now (assuming motorway destined traffic doesn't back up on to it).

The only problem with looking around this corner of Cheshire is that property is desirable here, and the prices are high as a result.
  • You should probably change your thread title to 'Moving to Cheshire'.
