Waitrose - keep all receipts in case something goes off

Not sure if this is the right forum, but if you buy anything in Waitrose now make sure you keep the receipt.
I bought 6 tomatoes - in Waitrose packaging - on Thursday with a best before date of 3 September (today). Went to cook them this morning & 3 were rotten so thought I'd take them back for a refund. Didn't have the receipt but they were still in the Waitrose packaging showing today's date so didn't think it'd be a problem (have done this before without a problem).
Waitrose new policy is no refund without a receipt for any reason - can understand for a change of mind but because something clearly from there has gone off???
Make sure you keep all receipts from Waitrose in case something goes off!

Most stores won't refund without a receipt. You could have found them in the bin
Did they offer you replacement tomatoes0 -
Thanks for reply - no offer of replacing which they've always done in the past as clearly about from Waitrose.
I didn't think you need a receipt for faulty goods (which I'd think rotten tomatoes would be), just proof of what shop they came fton(indicated on packaging)?0 -

You need proof of purchase, not proof of where the goods came from. Retailers have become less flexible as a result of thieves taking things then trying to return them for cash.0 -
Never shopped in Waitrose, but if i ever do . . .0

Perhaps they think they need a receipt from you as you've done it before?0

"Always"? Golly, how often have you taken stuff back to Waitrose?0

Sounds fair to me. To be honest i would have put them in the bin.0

I had some own label breakfast cereal from Asda which on opening, a foul smell came from the bag.
It was well in date - March 2018, binned the receipt and they gave me a refund and an exchange! Since I purchased the cereal, the store doesn't sell Asda version, so got the branded one. This is a system account and does not represent a real person. Just playing Devil's Advocate here...no suggestions of impropriety intended:
How would Waitrose know the rotten tomatoes corresponded with any receipt any way? The tomatoes aren't individually barcoded with a receipt number.
Tomatoes are perishable and may well "expire" before their supposed expiry date.
I shop in my local Waitrose regularly. I've never had problems returning goods (I tend to keep receipts) but I don't think Waitrose are generally as good as they would like to think they are. I buy stuff from Waitrose that I can't get anywhere else, but I find Sainsbury's cheaper (eg milk) for every day stuff.0 -

Waitrose are excellent.
They keep the riff-raff out of M&S.0
