    Doing the diagnostics on a hardware issue is 90% of the job. Once you know the fault, it's just a part change. £40 is a bit OTT for most independents, but not excessively so. Normally the diagnostic charge is offset against the repair cost-but yours isn't being repaired.
    However, they should have told you about this, and if they didn't, you should have asked.
    Are you objecting to the size of the bill, or to paying a diagnostic fee at all? And please tell us the diagnosis...
    No free lunch, and no free laptop ;)
