What permissions and controls do I need ?

I'm having a window installed into what is a solid wall at the moment.

I can't get a straight answer by phone from the council re planning permission and building controls. I have to fill in an on-line request to find out what I need. This costs £60, before I even find out if I need it.

Does anyone know for certain what permissions and contriols I must have in place before work goes ahead ?

Thanks

People can't give you that info because it will be different depending on whether it's on the front of the building, on the side upstairs overlooking neighbours, or at the back.

If it's permitted development, you will still be subject to other regulations regarding construction, which will depend on what type of window and what size it is.

In order to et a 'straight answer' you'll need to supply straight facts, whether it's the council you're asking, or on MSE.

I expect you don't need planning and use a FENSA registered window installer to avoid building regulations. I would get the lintel above the new window sized by a structural engineer.

So they won't need building regs for the new opening?

They should. I'd get Building Control in and avoid FENSA!

Apols I don't mean to be vague, just not sure what is relevant. So here goes with everything I know. I'm sure you will ask about other stuff.

Width 1000mm. It will face the 'blank' wall of next door (detached) which is separated from me by just over the width of a single garage. I would have a narrow view of the top third of their garden (mainly fence and shed) as their conservatory roof would block my view of their patio etc. Anyway I would have obscure glass. The only opening part would be a full-width top 'light' the glass of which would be about 200mm (plus the frame obviously !).

1970's house cavity walls so the company said it's a particular type of lintel to bridge the cavity and spread the weight.

    Thanks again.
