Mistake in my wages

I have just been paid and my wage is half what it should be. I enquired as to why and was told that my holiday pay had been inputted incorrectly and was instead put into the 'holiday bonus' instead which is paid every 3 months.

This has left us extremely short this month and the extra income will mean I will be charged more tax next month.

Payroll have said there is nothing I can do as the wages have already gone through for this month. I am wondering what if anything I can do now as we cannot survive this month on this low wage.

Keep records of any losses you suffer (late payment charges, overdraft fees, etc.) and reclaim this from your employer

Ask your payroll department what they can do to help, given the error is theirs. However, given you know the problem will be rectified next month, then surely you can put all your normal spending on a credit card - that's exactly the sort of thing they're meant for?

Also, whilst you may pay more tax next month, you'll have paid less this month, so will probably even itself out.

They're probably fobbing you off to be honest.

I've used several types of the mainstream software and you can make adjustments to payroll even after submission to HMRC. All they'd have to do is undo what they have done, recalculate your actual wages, pay you the difference, give you a new payslip and submit a correction to HMRC. It would take me literally less than 5 minutes.

Unless their software physically can't do it there's no reason they can't correct it.

Since the error is theirs could you ask for a separate money payment as prepayment of next wage?

Some people don't have credit cards. I haven't had one for years.

How very nice for you - in situations such as these, they're quite useful.
  • The first thing is to try and work out how they have calculated the numbers, to see if the calculation is correct or not. They should be able to tell you how they have calculated it.

In the meantime, consider putting your daily spending onto an appropriate credit card. There are a number of credit cards which do not charge interest on purchases for a 12-18 month period. It would be advisable to try and get one of those cards.

I don't pay any tax as I'm under the threshold, so I will have to pay tax I don't usually pay next month.

As for a credit card, not everyone has good enough credit to get one.

There is nothing they can do, or there is nothing they are prepared to do.

Ask your manager to arrange another BACS payment (will be a cost for this) or a cheque if you feel the situation is intolerable.
    Don’t be a can’t, be a can.

The tax will sort itself out eventually.
