Urgent help needed (bank accounts)

I would be over the moon if i found a solution to this huge problem i have...so last year october i opened an account with nationwide and i ended up losing my debit card one evening and had not realized this until next morning, once i called them to get it blocked i had got the news that my account had been closed down. Days went on and they told me that it was for fraud and that someone had attempted to deposit £1300 into my account. Even though I had no clue of this happening I agreed and didnt mind that they closed the account until I had realized that I believe they put a blacklist on my name with all UK banks. The bank account was fairly new and I have no criminal activity history anything and in this case i was the victim of fraud and ended up being the fraudster. Nationwide denied that they had banned my name from any other banks or so but ever since this happened I have been too TSB, Lloyds, Santander and they have all opened me basic current accounts and closed them without reason after a week or so. I am highly frustrated and depressed as I have had no bank account for nearly a year and struggle to get paid from work and other things such as bills. What do you think is the cause of this and can anyone give me a solution please...i am lost and have tried everything possible to find out how can i get a normal bank account like a normal person. Thanks

You need to do a SAR to CiFAS and see what they say, do a search on here as there have been recent posts on the process. You need to see what they say and then if necessary raise a formal complaint with Nationwide.

This will take some time, if you need a bank account try Cashplus they do charge but it is a small price for access to DD etc.

Your post is lacking in info on the fraud, did you get police involved etc.

So you lost your card and found out someone tried to deposit £1300 into your bank. What would the person who deposited the money gain ?
  • I called CIFAS, they made a report for me but im not entirely sure it will get me out of my problem. The police did not get involved as i didnt lose any money or anything as the fraudelent activity was based on my account being used to do so rather than withdrawing anything to affect me.
  • I have no clue, this is what nationwide told me. Someone had my card and tried to deposit that amount for fraudlent reasons and my account got shut down there and then. I havent been able to open an account ever since even though nationwide deny that they put a black mark on my name.

Give them a break, not everyone is fully competent with the funtionality of a forum. Perhaps I little tact in future?

I suggest asking Nationwide why exactly they have closed the account, explain you were the victim of potential fraud.

It may be worth your while to contact someone like 'Jessica Investigates' of the Saturday telegraph to see of they can help - sometimes having the press involved can break a deadlock.

I've seen a couple of stories where people had similar issues and it came down to the account having been flagged for possible criminal behaviour - something which tripped the warnings for funding terror organisation, or other criminal activity. You then have the difficulty that the bank can't tell you what's wrong, because it would break the 'tipping off' rules, so you can't sort it out. Something like that might happen as a result of activity on your account, or possibly if you share a name with someone dodgy.

You could try visiting your branch of Nationwide, explaining the situation and asking whether they can re-open the account for you, and whether they are able to see anything which might explain why you are having issues, or suggest anything you can do.(you could also consider making request for the data they hold on you https://www.gov.uk/data-protection/find-out-what-data-an-organisation-has-about-you although be aware they are entitled to withhold some types of information)

One issue is that you probably have to go a fair way up to get someone with the authority to override a 'computer says no' issue. It might be worth making a formal complaint to whichever bank you've had this happen with most recently, and ask them to review the decision and to explain the situation. the difficulty is that banks are not obliged to offer accounts to everyone, and unless they are rejecting you for a characteristic of yours protected under the equality act,
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)

I appreciate your help. I understand where you are coming from but regarding communicating with Nationwide, i have tried everything. Nationwide deny having put anything against my name but im sure it was them as ive never had this issue until this situation happened. So what do i actually do to pin point this problem, i just keep getting sent from website to website and feel like im going in circles. Every time i try to open a normal current account I get it opened and within a week it is closed without reason. Im really stuck and I am struggling very badly. I am 99.5% sure my name is flagged with uk banks, the problem is how do i get deflagged in this type of problem?
