ISP Problems

I had a problem today in that some websites would function but others not and the browsers Chrome and Firefox kept defaulting to a webpage saying account failed. After speaking with Plusnet, my ISP, it was eventually discovered that I was sharing the same IP with another customer who was barred. When the IP was changed all the problems ceased.

ISPs should not be causing these problems and the authorities need to act.
Rob

If it's an IPv4 addresses, then there's little or nothing that can be done about it.

IPv4 addresses have now run out. There are no more available to be allocated. The result is that ISPs just have to keep recycling the addresses they have. If somebody turns off their router, the address is reclaimed and given to someone else.

There's also nothing an ISP can do if some third party chooses to block connections from any given IP address.
    If it sticks, force it.
If it breaks, well it wasn't working right anyway.

The ISP isn't causing these problems, it is the site you are trying to access causing the problem. IP address blocking is not sensible for many reasons and they are easily bypassed if someone has a mind to.

A lot do, much to my surprise.

I'm not a Windows or Mac user, I use Ubuntu. Found out the other day that the Ubuntu repositories block IPv6, which means that Ubuntu users could not download software, or update the OS at all. *Slow hand clap* The worldwide uptake of IPv6 has been inexcusably slow.

For the OP I used to be with Plusnet quite some years ago, and had an issue similar to that which you describe. It wasn't for the reason that Plusnet allegedly gave you, it was actually because one of their DNS servers failed, but they refused to admit that for a week.

Which is why you should always configure your router to point to more than one DNS server

If your router will let you do so ... BT's Home Hub 4 doesn't. That's why I've set alternative DNS servers in my PC's network adaptor settings; my other devices can simply use the hub's standard settings. :)
